Não critico o silêncio - I don't criticize the silence

Não critico a fala do silêncio,

até porque não sou dado a
comentar temas os quais
não tenho domínio.

Ontem a noite, enquanto eu
esperava pelo sono, ouvi
o silêncio falar coisas que
mexeram muito comigo.

A fala do silêncio me
perturbou, despertou o meu
senso de dúvidas, e me fez
perceber a minha ignorância.

Quando a madrugada
chegou me encontrou
acordado, eu ainda
ruminava a fala do silêncio.

Quando a luz do sol bateu em
minha janela o silêncio calou,
se despediu prometendo
voltar à noite.

I don't criticize silence

I don’t criticize what silence says,
especially since I do not use to
comment on topics that I
don’t fully understand.

Last night, while I
was waiting to fall asleep, I heard
the silence speak words that
moved me deeply.

The voice of the silence
unsettled me, awakened my
sense of doubt, and made me
to realize my ignorance.

When dawn
arrived, it found me
awake; I was still
mulling over the silence’s words.

When the sunlight hit on
my window, the silence fell silent,
said goodbye, promising
to return at night.

Mais um dia, outro dia. - Just another day.

Mais um dia, outro dia,
me distancio do início, me aproximo
do fim, o fim onde tudo o que deixei
para depois me espera.

O meu sorriso na chegada,
a minha lágrima no adeus,
tudo que parecia não valer nada,
mas me custou muito quando se perdeu.

Mais um dia,
menos um dia,
me distanciando do prometido,
me aproximando do esquecido.

Mais uma chuva,
o dia frio, em oração, diz amém,
eu que me acreditava sendo muito,
e me descubro, agora, sendo quase ninguém.

Os dias passaram e levaram
tudo o que eu acreditava ser, forte,
bonito, o meu vigor e as amizades que
deixei de viver, só me restou o adeus.

Just another day.

Another day, yet another day,
I drift further from the beginning, I draw closer
to the end—the end where everything I put off
until later awaits me.

My smile upon arrival,
my tear at the farewell,
everything that seemed worthless,
but cost me so much when it was lost.

Another day,
one day less,
moving away from what was promised,
drawing closer to what was forgotten.

Another rain,
the cold day, in prayer, says “Amen,”
I who believed myself to be so much,
and now find myself to be almost no one.

The days passed and took with them

everything that I believed myself to be, strong,

handsome, my vigor and the friendships that I

no longer nurtured; all that remained was a farewell.

O soluço do soluçar - The hiccup of hiccups

O soluço soluça o soluçar dos
inocentes.
São gente que sofre sem ter
a quem reclamar.

As lágrimas desafogam o
soluçar, mas não ameniza o
sofrimento daqueles que 
estão a chorar.

As preces dobram os seus e se

põem a orar, oram e suas
orações vão ao encontro dos
inocentes para lhes confortar.

O soluço, com o seu olhar fixo
no céu, implora por uma
intervenção divina que espera
que cedo ou tarde virá.

The hiccup of hiccups

The sob echoes the sobbing of 

the innocent.
They are people who suffer 

without any way to protest.

Tears give vent to the
sobbing, but do not ease the
suffering of those who have
reasons to weep.

The faithful fold their hands 

and begin to pray; they pray, 

and their prayers reach out to

the innocent to comfort them.

The sob, with its gaze fixed
on the horizon, hopes for a
divine intervention that it 

knows will occur sooner or 

later.

As paredes falam. - The walls speak.

 

Não sei o que as paredes falam,
muito menos se elas falam, mas
a vida me ensinou que elas
veem e ouvem tudo o que se dá
ao seu redor e os guarda por
segredos, segredos só seus.

O silêncio da noite, em segredo,
me contou que as paredes, em
todos os evento que se dão
diante seu olhos, atuam senão
como protagonistas, o faz como
coadjuvantes.

O tempo me mostrou que,
independente do que demore,
a parede traz à luz tudo o que
foi vivido em seu ambiente.
O tempo me alertou que as
paredes não guardam segredos.

Ainda hoje não sei se as paredes
veem, e escutam os eventos que
se dão ao seu redor, mas não
tenho dúvidas de que não é
seguro guardar segredos entre
quatro paredes.

The walls speak.

I don’t know what the walls say,
much less if they speak at all, but
life has taught me that they
see and hear everything that happens
around them and keep it as
secrets, secrets all their own.

The silence of the night, in secret,
told me that the walls, in
every event that takes place
before their eyes, act if not
as protagonists, then as
supporting characters.

Time has shown me that,
no matter how long it takes,
the wall brings to light everything that
has been experienced in its surroundings.
Time has warned me that
walls do not keep secrets.

Even today, I don’t know if walls
see and hear the events that
unfold around them, but I have
no doubt that it is not
safe to keep secrets within
four walls.

O vendedor de ilusões. - The illusions seller.

 

Não tome os meus devaneios por

tuas verdades, pois somente eu 

sei dos medos que me assolam 

enquanto devaneando.

As minhas ilusões são minha 

ilusões e sou eu que as choro

quando estas, iradas, se

transformam em desilusões.

Sou um vendedor de ilusões e

vendo ilusões para os incautos

que se deixam iludir,

independente das lágrimas que

eu possa lhes causar.

Não tome os meus devaneios

por teus devaneios, pois só eu

os vivo e sei onde os estes

podem levar.

Não queira ser mais um

desavisado que visita as

minhas linhas para ouvir as

loucuras que, em devaneios,

costumo contar.

Sou um vendedor de ilusões e

só ilusões tenho para entregar.

Cuida as ilusões,

invariavelmente, costumam

machucar.

Don’t take my daydreams as 
your truths, for only I
know the fears that plague me
while I daydream.

My illusions are my illusions,

and it is me who mourn them
when they, in their fury,
turn into disappointments.

I am a seller of illusions, and
I sell illusions to those who
allow themselves to be 

deceived, regardless of the 

tears I may cause them to 

shed.

Do not take my daydreams
for your own, for only I
experience them, and I 

know where they may lead.

Don’t be just another
unsuspecting soul who visits
my pages to hear the 

madness that, 

in my daydreams, 

I tend to recount.

I am a seller of illusions,

and I have only illusions to 

offer to you.
Be careful with illusions 

they, invariably, tend to

hurt.

Se eu compreendesse a noite - If I understood the night

Se eu compreendesse a noite como
sempre acreditei compreendê-la eu
jamais a deixaria dormir só.
Se eu entendesse a solidão da noite
eu estaria sempre ao seu lado quando
no silêncio da madrugada.

Se eu amasse a noite como sempre
acreditei amá-la, eu a ninaria nas
gélidas madrugadas de inverno, e
cuidaria para que ela nunca provasse
o cálice da solidão.
Se eu amasse a noite!

Se eu compreendesse a noite como
sempre profecei compreende-la, eu
estaria com ela onde quer que ela
estivesse e jamais a deixaria
entregue à sua solidão quando na
solidão da madrugada.

If I understood the night

If I understood the night as

I’ve always believed I did, I

would never let her sleep alone.

If I understood the night’s loneliness,

I would always be by her side in

the silence of the early morning.

If I loved the night as I’ve always

believed I loved her, I would lull her to sleep in the

freezing winter dawns, and

I would make sure she never tasted

the cup of loneliness.

If I loved the night!

If I understood the night as

I have always claimed to understand it, I

would be with her wherever she

might be and would never leave her

at the mercy of her loneliness in the

loneliness of the early morning.

Santa Vitória do Palmar - Saint Victoria of Palmar

 

Tarde de verão, dentre outros tantos
senãos, às margens da lagoa mirim
nasceu uma nova paixão em mim.
Foi assim, o sol brilhando no céu, os
pássaros cantarolando, e o aroma
gostoso da lagoa me abraçando.

A lagoa mirim veio me encontrar em
Santa Vitòria do Palmar, extremo sul
do Rio Grande do sul, terra onde os
ventos do outono cumprimentam o
verão cantando as mais lindas
canções.

Santa Vitória do Palmar, santa 

morena, pele cor de canela, cabelos
anelados, sorriso misterioso.
Santa, menina, moça, mulher que

me abraça, minha Santa,

Santa Vitória do Palmar.

Tarde de verão, dentre outros tantos
senãos, eu pescando na lagoa mirim

e assim, me dou conta do quanto 

me encantam os voos das garças 

que sobrevoam o céu como se 

voando só para mim.

Saint Victoria of Palmar

An afternoon summer, among so many
other things, on the shores of Lagoa Mirim,
a new passion was born within me.
That’s how it was: the sun shining in the sky, the
birds chirping, and the delightful scent
of the lagoon enveloping me.

The little lagoon came to find me in
Santa Vitória do Palmar, at the southernmost tip
of Rio Grande do Sul, a land where the
autumn winds bid farewell to
summer by singing the most beautiful
songs.

Santa Vitória do Palmar, holy
brunette, cinnamon-colored skin,
curly hair, mysterious smile.
Saint, girl, young woman, woman who
embraces me, my Saint,
Santa Vitória do Palmar.

A summer afternoon, among so many
other things, I’m fishing in the little lagoon
and so, I realize just how much
I’m enchanted by the flight of the herons
that soar through the sky as if
flying just for me.

As minhas loucuras. - My crazy moments.

Não vivo as minhas loucuras
como um louco.
Se me desse tomar as minhas
loucuras por guia, sorriria
quando tomasse a minha vida
por vadia.

As vadias, se loucas, não
seriam tão loucas como as
coisas do meu dia a dia.
Há uma semana não faz
sol e eu, em minha loucura,
vivo as nostalgias.

Não tomo a minha loucura
por mulheres da rua.
Louco respeito a sua nudez
e em vez de critica-la busco
a compreensão, ainda que
esta se recusa a
testemunhar o momento.

Não vivo as minhas loucuras
como deveria vivê-la sendo
um louco.
A lucidez, mulher sensata,
de vez em quando me
visita e sorri ao me encontrar
sano.

My crazy moments.

I don’t live my madness

like a madman.

If I were to let my

madness be my guide, I’d smile

when I took my life

as a slut.

Sluts, if they were mad, wouldn’t

be as mad as the

things in my daily life.

It hasn’t been sunny

for a week, and I, in my madness,

live in nostalgia.

I don’t mistake my madness

for streetwalkers.

Madly, I respect her nakedness,

and instead of criticizing her, I seek

understanding, even though

it refuses to

bear witness to the moment.

I don’t live my madness

the way I should, given that

I’m a madman.

Lucidity, that sensible woman,

visits me from time to time

and smiles when she finds me

sane.

Manifestar - To express.

Transbordando medo, invento uma
desculpa para justificar a minha
culpa por não falar quando o
mundo pede para eu me manifestar.

Aterrorizado dobro o meu joelho em
oração mas a oração não me ouve,
ela não aceita a minha desculpa
para me guardar calado e me culpa.

Num descuido o terço me escapa,
me cai da mão e o chão o apara, ele

o apara e me olha de soslaio, olhar

que me acusa, não me desculpa.

Uma lágrima me cai dos olhos, mas
a desculpa não se apieda de mim e
me culpa, ela não entende o porquê
do meu medo de me manifestar.

To express

Overflowing with fear, I make up an

excuse to justify my

guilt for not speaking up when the

world asks me to speak out.

Terrified, I bend my knees in

prayer, but prayer does not hear me;

it does not accept my excuse

for staying silent and blames me.

In a moment of carelessness, the rosary slips from my grasp,

falls from my hand, and the floor catches it; it

catches it and looks at me sideways, a gaze

of accusation, and offers me no forgiveness.

A tear falls from my eye, but

the excuse takes no pity on me and

blames me; it does not understand the reason

for my fear of speaking out.

Manifestare

Travolto dalla paura, invento una

scusa per giustificare il mio

senso di colpa per non aver parlato quando il

mondo mi chiede di farmi sentire.

Terrorizzato, piego il ginocchio in

preghiera, ma la preghiera non mi ascolta,

non accetta la mia scusa

per restare in silenzio e mi biasima.

In un momento di distrazione il rosario mi sfugge,

mi cade dalla mano, il pavimento lo raccoglie, lo

raccoglie e mi guarda di sbieco, con uno sguardo

accusatorio, e non mi perdona.

Una lacrima mi scende dagli occhi, ma

la scusa non ha pietà di me e

mi incolpa, non capisce il perché

della mia paura di farmi sentire.

A política - Politics.

Se existe uma mulher pela qual
não nutro nenhuma simpatia,
está mulher é a política, daí eu
querer tê-la sempre à vista, 
e saber o que ela anda fazendo.

A política é aquele tipo de
mulher para a qual não confio
virar as costas, ela é traiçoeira,
ela se mete em tudo.

A política se mete tanto em
minha vida, que determina até
onde posso ou não posso
morar, não dá para ignorá-la.

Apesar de todo o meu desprezo
pela política, me obrigo a ser
atencioso com ela.
Para que brigas?

A política é vaidosa, ela gosta de
ser percebida, daí não ser 

inteligente ignorá-la sob os risco

de ser ignorado por ela.

Ser ignorado pela política não é
de boa sorte, não quero ter a 

mesma sorte dos abandonados,

dos que ignoraram a política 

qundo esta os procurou.

Politics.

If there’s one woman for whom

I have absolutely no sympathy,

that woman is politics—which is why I

want to keep her in sight at all times,

to know what she’s up to.

Politics is the kind of

woman I don’t trust

enough to turn my back on; she’s treacherous,

she meddles in everything.

Politics meddles so much in

my life that it even determines

where I can and cannot

live—there’s no way to ignore it.

Despite all my contempt

for politics, I force myself to be

considerate toward it.

Why fight?

Politics is vain; it likes to

be noticed,  so it’s not

smart to ignore it, at the risk

of being ignored by it.

Being ignored by politics isn’t

good luck; I don’t want to share the

fate of the abandoned, of those

who ignored politics when it

sought them out.

Não reclamo das dores - I don't complain about the pain.

Não reclamo da dor com a qual o
desprezo em que me guardas
castiga o meu corpo, pior seria
se açoitasse o meu espírito.

Chorar escondido não faz o menor
sentido, e verter lágrimas sabendo
poder ser ignorado não tem razão.

Viver reclamando da solidão não
cura e aborrece, melhor é seguir
adiante, não lhes dar atenção.

O frio do desprezo em que me
guardas machuca, e o seu sabor é
amargo, daí eu não reclamar do frio
que o frio do que vivo me impõe.

I don't complain about the pain

I do not complain about the pain with which the contempt in which you hold me punishes my body; it would be worse if it lashed my spirit. Crying in secret makes no sense at all, and shedding tears knowing I might be ignored is pointless. Living while complaining about loneliness does not heal and is tiresome; it is better to move on, to pay them no attention. The cold of the contempt in which you hold me hurts, and its taste is bitter; that is why I do not complain about the cold that the cold of my existence imposes on me.

Non mi lamento dei dolori

Non mi lamento del dolore con cui il disprezzo con cui mi trattieni punisce il mio corpo; sarebbe peggio se flagellasse il mio spirito. Piangere di nascosto non ha alcun senso, e versare lacrime sapendo di poter essere ignorato non ha ragione d’essere. Vivere lamentandosi della solitudine non guarisce e infastidisce; meglio è andare avanti, senza prestare loro attenzione. Il freddo del disprezzo con cui mi tratti mi ferisce, e il suo sapore è amaro; ecco perché non mi lamento del freddo che il freddo di ciò che vivo mi impone.
