O calor é inclemente, o vento sonolento,
lugar.
Cansada de chorar de fome, a forme,
viciada em vidas, devora os viventes.
Vidas!
A fome toma a vidas dos pobres
sertanejos que, além de suas vidas, nada
mais tem para entregar.
E a seca campeia!
engole.

The drought in the NortheastThe heat is relentless, the wind sluggish,
barely able to blow.
The sun, fixed in the sky, looks down on the
living as if they were leaves
hanging on a clothesline to dry.
Clinging to its branches, disbelieving and
dependent, the living do not realize
who is causing their pain.
The drought dries everything up, even dreams!
The hot dust, blown by the wind, makes
the eyes weep.
The eyes weep for the drought, and the drought weeps
for its dead, but it does not protest, does not
protest—after all, death is the mistress of
this place.
Tired of weeping from hunger, the famine—
addicted to lives—devours the living.
Lives!
Hunger takes the lives of the poor
backcountry folk who, besides their lives, have nothing
else to give.
And the drought reigns supreme!
It has been a long time since rain visited the Northeast;
in fact, it has never liked to wander there.
In despair, the backcountry dweller looks up at the
sky and offers yet another prayer.
Thirsty, his eyes shed tears,
tears that fall and water the soil.
The soil, ravenous with hunger and thirst, accepts
any liquid that falls into its mouth.
It doesn’t matter if it’s water or tears—it
just quenches its thirst.
So the earth drinks; it drinks even the drops
of sweat that trickle down the brow of the
suffering countryman.
Fierce people, brave people who persist
in their inglorious struggle against the
relentless drought, without understanding that this
is not the work of the sun, but rather, it´s people falt.
Without rain, the rich earth becomes poor, and
being poor, like all the poor, it
is hungry.
Hungry, at the first groan of the
living, the earth opens its mouth and
swallows him.
It is the final resting place of yet another brave soul who
fell in the face of an unequal struggle.
An inglorious struggle, a struggle against an enemy
who, were he not such a friend, would long ago
have ceased to exist.
